Sustainability does not have to be hard. There are many small ways to start the journey. Your choice of beeswax wraps is a small way to create a huge sustainable footprint in your home by eliminating single use plastics.

The Basics

Do you want to start living a sustainable life but don't have the time to manage a family, work and everything in between when you are on the go? Okay you don't have to do a compost routine but think about what is in your house that is single use throw away: from straws to plastic wrap, foil and disposable (non renewable) cutlery to paper plates. These are most likely all household items that are in your household and can be easily replaced with more sustainable reusable or biodegradable items.

it is really that simple to start that sustainable journey!

Use Beeswax plastic wraps instead of plastic or foil

Beeswax wraps can last up to a year and come in many unique patterns and sizes. They are naturally antibacterial and smell great when fresh out of the box. Use these instead of single use plastic wraps when storing food or bringing your sandwich to work. For items that need to be frozen or for liquids use a reusable silicone bag. Silicone bags last a long time as they are highly reusable and easily washable. They also work well in the freezer and great for freezing or transporting liquids. The wraps are not good for raw meats but silicone bags are. If you are a sous vide fan you can use the silicone bags for those too. Easy to get rid of the single use plastics! Once you are done with the plastic wraps use the cardboard tube to wrap the beeswax wraps and store.

Switch to paper straws

Ask for a paper straw when you see plastic straws at a restaurant. In many major metropolitan areas this is becoming the norm. When at home use paper straws for stainless steel ones which can be easily washed for reuse.

Bring your own cutlery, or use bamboo utensils

In 2016 France banned plastic cutlery plates and cups. Why is the U.S. so far behind? Carry metal, bamboo or other Eco friendly utensils in your purse or car. I like to bring metal utensils to work to eat my yogurt so I don't have to use single use plastics at the office. There are some nice travel bamboo cutlery sets on the market that have a travel container and can be washed when get home. This goes for the coffee mugs too, bring your own!

Use biodegradable disposable plates

Many paper plates are coated so they don't leak. This material does not break down in a landfill and do not compost. Styrofoam is a forever landfill item. Choose disposable plates that are made from wheat straw or bagasse, a natural by product from sugar cane. They are great for commercial composting systems and can return to the earth up to six months time.

Bring your own earth friendly shopping and produce bags to the store

Purchase produce bags that already lists their tare weight so can be subtracted at the register. If you forget to bring them into the store just put everything back in the cart and bag up when get to the car.
